The Picasso Museum in Málaga, inaugurated in 2003, is located in the Los Condes de Buenavista Palace, a magnificent sixteenth century building that formerly housed the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts. After undergoing an exemplary remodelling process and intelligent adaptation of its premises to the modern concept of a museum it has become one of the main representatives of the culture of present-day Málaga. This marriage of a lordly Renaissance building and modern architectural design has resulted in an expositions venue that blends the old and the new in perfect harmony, creating that indispensable but rarely achieved sensation of utter relaxation that is necessary in order to admire the work of such a genius as Picasso.
The museum brings together more than 200 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and engravings, by this artistic genius from Málaga. Most were provided by Christine Ruiz Picasso and they encompass all of the painter’s periods. In addition to its permanent collections, the museum regularly organises exhibits of Picasso works from other great art galleries. One can thus view the most important creations of the most representative artists of the twentieth century in this Málaga museum.
A number of works in the museum’s collections have rarely before been exhibited in public, a fact that makes this Málaga art museum yet more unusual. The permanent collection brings together pieces dating from the late nineteenth century to 1972, meaning that after touring its twelve galleries visitors will have been able to fully observe the constantly evolving artistic style of this creative Málaga native.
Phoenician remains from the seventh century BC were discovered in the subsoil of this building during the remodelling work, as well as traces of Roman and Nazarite construction. They have been treated with respect and made a part of the exhibits.
The museum may be visited from Tuesday to Thursday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Visiting hours on Sundays and holidays are from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and on 24 and 31 December from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Closed on Mondays and on 25 December and 1 January. The ticket window closes half an hour before museum closing time.
