Selwo Aventura (Estepona)
The municipality of Estepona, in the western part of the province of Málaga very close to the border of Cádiz, is dominated by the spectacular Bermeja Mountains. They are the site of the Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja Nature Park, with its famous forest of Spanish firs and its distinctive reddish soil, a consequence of the abundance of minerals rich in iron oxide.

It also has a number of facilities that set it apart from the other villages in Málaga. One such example is Selwo Aventura (Selwo Adventure).

Selwo Aventura is considered to be the only theme park of its kind in Europe. This leisure complex at Kilometre 162.5 of the Costa del Sol Expressway covers an area of 100 hectares in which more than 2,000 animals from all five continents coexist in a semi-free state. This facility has recreated different ecosystems so that the animals won’t miss their natural environment. Visitors are thus able to observe them in surroundings that are very similar to what the animals knew in their place of origin. The park can be toured on foot or in all-terrain vehicles that follow established routes in order not to disturb the activities of the various species that inhabit the compound. The “Portico of Nature”, the “Bird Canyon” that takes in the lake preserve and the central “villages” and the “Valleys Route” are tours that have been adapted for four different ecosystems, along which visitors can enjoy the exceptionally interesting flora and fauna. One of its outstanding attractions is the Great Tyrolean Traverse, which with a length of more than 100 metres is the longest in Europe at the moment.

The park offers the option of spending the night right on the premises. For this purpose it has two “villages”, Watu and Massai, which were built to the original African pattern although they have all the comforts demanded by tourists. The huts are circular and are set up on a point that commands a view of a good part of the coast and the Mediterranean. It is also possible to make a VIP visit with a maximum of four persons by all-terrain vehicle, to be constantly accompanied by an expert guide. The tour lasts approximately four hours.

Visiting hours at Selwo Aventura are from from 20 February to 31 March, 1 to 30 September, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of November, and 4 to 8 December, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Weekends and public holidays in April, May, June and September, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. July and August, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. From 1 to 19 February, Mondays to Thursdays of November and 1 through 31 December, except from 4 to 8 December, the park is closed. For information telephone: 902 19 04 82.
