Sports Tourism
While it is true that the enormous opportunities that the Costa del Sol offers for golf and boating activities have contributed to the growth of tourism sectors specifically linked to those sports in this region, it is no less true that the province of Málaga is blessed with innumerable infrastructures and resources that allow the visitor to engage in many other sports the whole year long. It is therefore no wonder that each season elite athletes and internationally famous clubs and teams choose municipalities on the Costa del Sol for their pre-season training, and of course, these localities also make these athletic facilities available to the ordinary visitor.

Turismo deportivoBesides public facilities, the Costa del Sol tourist can choose from an immense array of clubs and hotels that also offer the opportunity to practice some kind of sports activity on their grounds. This is the case, for example, with the first-rate tennis courts that are available at a good number of establishments and that have become an indispensable feature of the offer that certain lodging establishments place at their clients’ disposal. The high-level competitions that are frequently held at these facilities are sufficient proof of the fine quality of which they can boast. Some of these events are on the calendar of the ATP (Professional Tennis Association).

In recent times, facilities for other fashionable sports, such as paddleball, or for activities that were already traditional and had many devotees, such as squash and badminton, have been built in addition to tennis courts. Both public and private initiatives have played a crucial role in this field also, since their investments have allowed the development of important projects to provide various municipalities in the province with infrastructure in proportion to the demand. Clubs of recognised international prestige and those hotel establishments that were most aware of the need to encourage the growth of sports tourism have done the rest.

The benign climate of the Costa del Sol makes it easier to perform all these activities and becomes a crucial factor in promoting other, seemingly more seasonal, sports such as swimming. The gentle temperatures recorded throughout the year in the province and the almost constant presence of the sun in the Málaga sky make this destination an ideal place for water sports, which can be enjoyed either in one of the numerous sports complexes and swimming pools distributed along the Costa del Sol or simply by going to some of its beaches, which spread out all along its more than 160 kilometres of coastline. This same circumstance makes the province of Málaga a very good area for other sports such as volleyball and beach football.

For professional or amateur practitioners of more sophisticated sports, such as sailing, surfing, windsurfing or kite surfing, Málaga also offers endless opportunities. Both in the leisure ports and on many of the beaches in the areas with the greatest tourist affluence there are various entities and businesses that facilitate everything from the means with which to practice these disciplines –mainly by renting equipment--to the professional instruction needed to enjoy them. There are even several specialised schools and clubs that provide the visitor the opportunity to complete the required training courses for these and many other water sports, such as diving.

Programmes and excursions are also regularly organised for exploring the extraordinarily beautiful and diverse sea floors off the Málaga coast or for searching for areas suitable for sports that require certain navigational conditions.
