Gay tourism
In the middle part of the last century, and coinciding with the onset of heavy tourist traffic, the Costa del Sol, in addition to being thought of as a first-class destination overflowing with unique virtues, attributes and qualities, began to be internationally known as a place strongly linked to the principles of tolerance, civility and respect that were beginning to take root in western society with the coming of the new age.

turismo gayWhen half of Europe still had not awoken from the social lethargy that preceded the momentous transformations that marked the age, and when in Spain the political regime would not yet permit the portrayal of scenes with a place for the sweeping renovations that would later be imposed on most of the Old Continent, this region became an idyllic refuge, an oasis of freedom and the standard for the openness that was already making its own small advances in the field of tourism.

It was thus only to be expected that Málaga would be a pioneer in presenting images to the world that in those distant times were huge departures indeed from hidebound ancestral customs, such as tourists on the beach removing the tops of their bathing suits or same-sex couples enjoying vacations in the warmth of an absolutely tolerant environment that over time would become the favoured enclave of the gay community.

The construction of the Alcazaba dates from the beginning of the 11th century, but it was in the middle of that century when the King Badis, of the taifa of Granada, turned it into one of the most important Muslim fortresses of the age
