Monumento Natural Cañón de las Buitreras

Share

Declared a Natural Monument by Junta de Andalucía in 2003, Cañón de las Buitreras is a 22-hectare gorge that cuts into the countryside surrounding the villages of Benalauría, Benarrabá and Cortes de Frontera.

The gorge is named after the griffon vultures (buitre leonado in Spanish) that live here. In addition to these majestic birds, you may also be lucky enough to spot Bonelli’s eagles, kestrels, doves, swifts and many types of bats. In terms of plants, you will find fan palm trees measuring upwards of 2m.

To access the gorge, the best place to start is Cañada del Real Tesoro or El Colmenar district in Cortes de la Frontera.
