  • FUENTE DE PIEDRA (FOUNTAIN OF STONE)

Fuente de Piedra (Fountain of Stone) is a typical Andalusian village on the plain of the region of Antequera, Malaga province.

This town stands out for its natural setting, strong traditions and the lagoon that bears its name, listed as a nature reserve.

    IN FUENTE YOU CANNOT MISS

    MONUMENTS

Fuente de la Piedra which gives name to this town, dating from the XVIII century, and was built on an earlier fountain built by the Romans. The initial source was known by the name of Fons Divinus referring to its healing waters.

Another must-see sites is the parish church of Our Lady of Virtues of Moorish style with Gothic touch. Originally in the XIX century, this temple was attached to the municipality of Mollina where the offering was given to Our Lady of Mercy chapel.

The structure of this town is a claim in itself, because in its straight streets, one can find houses on two levels with lintels door and wrought iron balconies. Particularly, it is noteworthy, the neoclassical palace of the Marquesa de Fuente de Piedra of the XIX century , the summer residence of the Condes del Castillejo del Tajo, and the parish of the Duke of Mandos.

For all the travellers who are fan of oenology, the famous wineries of Malaga Virgen (an extraordinary sweet wine) are a must, because in its 250 hectares of area, four varieties of grapes are grown. Facilities at this vineyard are in the estate of Vistahermosa, founded in 1885.

  • HOW TO GET TO FUENTE DE PIEDRA FROM MÁLAGA

To reach Fuente de Piedra from Málaga capital in car, we recommend opting for the combination of highways A-45 and A-92, route that takes approximately 55 minutes.

There is also a possibility to reach in public transport through interurban buses.

  • NATURAL RESOURCES

The tourist attraction for exception of this small town is undoubtedly the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, one of the four sites listed as a nature reserve in the province. Thanks to it, prehistoric, Iberian and Roman have settled in these lands. Currently, it is the refuge of the second colony with the largest number of pink flamingos from across Europe, making it an ideal place for bird watching and exercising of trekking.

    POPULAR FESTIVALS

The most important event for villafontenses are the festivities of the Virgin of Virtues, held for four days in September and is declared of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia and of Provincial Tourist Singularity. In its program, we can find horse racing tapes inspired by the medieval era in which, after a parade of women dressed in mantelets, horsemen participants come galloping with a pike that must pass through a ring located in the middle of the street. This celebration will accompany a flamenco evening, a festival of verdiales and other children's activities. The end of the festival comes when, after the procession of Our Lady of Virtues, fireworks are launched.

Other notable festivals are the Carnival, the Festival of Candeleria (Candlemas), which take on a pilgrimage to the Saint, or July Fair in which the performances, stands and popular celebrations fill the streets of Fuente de Piedra. In May, Cruces and the Ruta de la Tapa are celebrated.

    CUISINE

Typical dishes of Fuente de Piedra are determined by the products harvested on their land, predominating olive oil and flour.

Among the specialties of this town we must emphasize on the truncheon (dish of tomato, pepper, garlic and bread mashed with olive oil, which is served cold accompanied by egg, tuna or ham), migas (toasted bread, vegetables and meat) and gazpacho (smoothie tomato, pepper, cucumber, garlic and olive oil). We recommend also to try the encebolladas partridges and pairing these dishes with excellent local wines.

The sweet tooth can not miss the mantecados (shortcakes) (excellent Christmas sweet based on ground almonds) or typical bienmesabe (biscuits with egg, almonds and cinnamon, among other ingredients).
