Don José Luis Morales Marín (b. Murcia 1945 and d. Marbella) founded the print museum. He was the first person to make a donation – of some 1,431 pieces – which started the gallery’s collection in 1992. Over the years, the gallery has received many donations from individuals and printmakers and currently counts 4,000 works of art. The museum hosts a range of activities, including exhibitions, lectures and printing workshops throughout the year. Marbella renovated the former Bazán Hospital (a civil renaissance building dating back to 1568) to house the gallery's collections alongside the other buildings. In 2004, the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo was listed a Site of Cultural Interest in the Monuments category for its cultural value. Over time, it has received various recognitions including awards from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Calcografía nacional in 2000 and the Descubrir el Arte prize in 2010.
