The Pinsapo de la Escalareta (“Escalereta Spanish Fir”) Natural Monument is located in the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park in the municipality of Parauta. The tree for which the site is named is a beautiful specimen belonging to the fir family. The species is over 20 million years old and originally lived in a very cold, wet climate, which no longer exists today. It has been possible to conserve this species because of the climate present in certain parts of the Serranía de Ronda range; in the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park alone, we can enjoy over 3,000 hectares of Spanish fir. Of all the species in this protected natural area, the most striking is the Pinsapo de la Escalereta for its impressive size. It is equivalent in height to a five-storey building and is supported by a sturdy trunk. Considered to be the oldest Spanish fir in the Sierra de las Nieves (According to estimates, it could be over 500 years old), it is 26 metres tall, with a trunk that reaches 5.10 metres circumference and a crown projection in excess of 200 square metres.
