Natural Reserve of Lagunas de Archidona
The Lagunas de Archidona Nature Reserve, declared a protected natural area in 1989, consists of two saltwater lakes containing sulphates. Laguna Grande (“Big Lake”), which as its name indicates is the larger of the two, has crystalline water throughout the year. Laguna Chica (“Small Lake”), on the other hand, has cloudier water and occasionally dries up during periods with no rainfall, due to its smaller size. The nature reserve is frequented by waterbirds and surrounded by hollows and meadows with holm oaks, Portuguese oaks, wild roses and other plants, giving the landscape great ecological value.
