Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol - Monumentos en la provincia de Málaga y su Costa del Sol

Church of Santiago

Share

The Church of Santiago is the oldest Christian building in Málaga. It was built in 1490, on the ruins of an old mosque. The original central door, in the Mudejar style, is blocked off. It was part of the original façade. The square tower, also Mudejar in style, was designed as a separate minaret and attached in the sixteenth century.

This church houses artistic treasures like works by Alonso Cano and Niño de Guevara, as well as remarkable gold and silver work. In one of the side chapels there is a sculpture much revered in Holy Week: Our Lady of Love and Jesus the Rich, by José Navas-Parejo.

In 1881, the church witnessed the christening of Málaga-born artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso.
