The years between 1930 and the 1950s are an extremely controversial period in the history of Russian art. At that time, a totalitarian regime was in place in the Soviet Union, which controlled all spheres of citizens’ lives. The artistic process in the country was also regulated by the state. The main function of art was the implementation of propaganda for the purpose of “ideological change and education of workers in the spirit of socialism”. Socialist realism became a compulsory creative method for all Soviet art.

Just as realism could be understood by the great masses, artists were asked to create a convincing image of a united, just and prosperous state in which - thanks to the victory of socialism - every citizen was happy and full of enthusiasm for their work.
