Gounod, Bellini, Berlioz and Tchaikovsky all dedicated musical compositions to Romeo and Juliet, but Prokofiev was the first composer to create a true “Shakespearian Ballet” and, with it, one of the most significant works of the 20th century. This is the adaptation created by the famous choreographer Leonid Lavrovsky for the Imperial Russian Ballet and first performed in the Bolshoi Theatre in 1946.
The Imperial Russian Ballet was founded in 1994 by Maya Plisetskaya, for many years its honorary president and general advisor. Gediminas Tarandá was the principal soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The company is renowned throughout the world, has a cast of 45 ballerinas of the highest artistic standard and its repertoire includes all of the big names in classical ballet.
