Surrealism was a movement that especially attracted female artists because it was disruptive, provocative and showed a more spontaneous image of women in a context in which they claimed both their rights as citizens and the enjoyment of their own bodies. An art that attaches greater importance to personal reality through a play of dualities.

Nevertheless, the movement ended up disappointing them, since they were almost always considered as muses. This is why they ended up breaking away from the movement and liberating themselves from it until reaching creative independence. “We are fully free. Female artists and surrealism” traces the works of these artists and their function of contrast with the patriarchal society.

The exhibition, curated by Professor José Jiménez, professor of Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts of the Autonomous University of Madrid, reclaims the protagonism of a group of female artists who have had to wait for their well-deserved recognition. Some of them are Eileen Agar, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Germaine Dulac, Leonor Fini, Valentine Hugo, Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, Maruja Mallo, Lee Miller, Nadja, Meret Oppenheim, Kay Sage, Ángeles Santos, Dorothea Tanning, Toyen, Remedios Varo and Unica Zürn.

The strong personality of each one of these female artists is transmitted through more than a hundred works of art gathered for the occasion, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages, photographs and films.
