Museum of Popular Arts

The Museum of Popular Arts and Customs was inaugurated in 1976 at the Mesón de la Victoria, an former 17th-Century posada, or inn, with the aim of preserving and studying the ethnological heritage of Malaga and its province. Its collection, organised into 19 rooms, attempts to represent the rural and urban life of the province with the aim of portraying everyday life through the most characteristic sectors of society, their customs and activities. Malaga’s Museum of Popular Arts is therefore one of the best platforms for gaining an insight into local and historic circumstances. To this end it includes fields that encompass activities as a varied as packsaddle-making or the art of tack-making, smithing or vine growing; that depict characteristic settings like the flourmill, oil press or the chambers of bourgeois homes; and that bring together traditional objects like kitchen smokers, local earthenware or a sardine net.

How to get here

The building is located in the city’s historic centre, on the banks of the River Guadalmedina, between Puerta Nueva and Atarazanas. The main entrance to the Museum is via the Pasillo Santa Isabel alleyway, however the original and most emblematic front door of this former inn is located on Plaza de Camas, woven into a network of streets with a highly regular layout in the Islamic tradition.
