Screw Torcal Natural Monument

The Tornillo del Torcal (“Torcal Screw”) Natural Monument is located in the Torcal de Antequera Natural Site. The area, spanning 1,953 square metres, was granted Natural Monument status in 2001. Because of its unusual appearance, similar to that of a screw, it is used as the symbol of the Torcal de Antequera Natural Site. The site comprises a kind of stone city created by the natural erosion by wind and rain, giving rise to cavities and labyrinths between the rocks. The word “karstic” is used to describe this type of landscape: the limestone terrain of the area has been eroded away with the passage of time, creating the natural sculptures visible today, including the Tornillo del Torcal.
