Ruta por Alpandeire

Alpandeire, Genal valley viewpont

Share

At about 11 in the morning, we reached the village of Alpandeire. Before arriving at this tiny village in the Serranía de Ronda, we were struck by its autumn landscape. The leaves of the chestnut trees covered everything in our path, and offered spectacular views.

We parked right at the entrance to the village, and went for a walk towards Plaza de Fray Leopoldo, located near the house where this Capuchin monk was born. We continued to walk until we stumbled upon the Church of San Antonio de Padua, an imposing church built between the 16th and 18th centuries, and which is known as the Cathedral of the Serranía. This nickname is no surprise given the church's size, which stands outs amongst the small whitewashed houses that are typical of the Serranía.

We continued our walk, during which we saw a number of flour mills, an old jail, the washing place, the source of the Pozancón and an engraving of amazing size. We also walked amongst the orchards, then beside a water fountain and the old village washing place.

To finish off our visit, our stomachs full, we went to the Fray Leopoldo viewpoint. From here, we had some of the best views of the Genal Valle.

For our stay we chose the Casa Grande de Alpandeire (located in calle Barranco). The establishment is unique, charming, and located in a renovated building from the 17th century that has remained standing ever since. Oddly enough, the restaurant is situated in the former stables of the house. We were able to enjoy an interesting variety of dishes typical of the area, including vegetarian options.

From Alpandeire you can start the 18.8 kilometre 6th stage of the Great Path, which links the municipality with Ronda. There’s also the last part of stage 5, which starts in Benalauría and takes in 15.5 kilometres.
