Embalse La Viñuela - Provincia de Málaga y su Costa del Sol

La Viñuela Reservoir

Share

Although the La Viñuela reservoir is like any other in being an artificial impoundment of free-flowing waters it can still be considered a natural setting, for since its construction one cannot imagine this municipality without its reservoir. It not only has enriched the surroundings with an extraordinary hydraulic project but also with a new landscape that is being exploited as a tourist attraction.

As with any great project, the reservoir had its genesis in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, when it was decided to regulate the waters of the River Vélez. It would not be until more than a century later, however, that the project became a reality. It is built across the channel of the River Guaro, which also carries the waters of the Rivers Salia, Benamargosa, Bermuza, and Rubite and the Madre del Llano de Zafarraya stream and is, with its 170 cubic hectometres, the highest-capacity reservoir in the province of Málaga. In its surroundings are facilities for water sports and barbecue and recreational areas, as well as several hiking trails.
