The Lagunas de Campillos Nature Reserve is a series of seasonal lakes which are unconnected to the sea. Located within the municipality of Campillos, in the north of Málaga province, its protected area covers 1,126 hectares. The lakes that make up the nature reserve are Laguna Dulce, Laguna Salada, Laguna de Capacete, Laguna de Camuñas and Laguna del Cerero. Declared a nature reserve in 1989, the area’s vegetation is dominated by rushes, because of the wetness of the soil. In some cases, this coexists with the local residents’ agricultural land. The lakes attract a large number of birds, such as flamingos, anatids and the northern shoveller duck.
