Castillo Sohail

Castillo Sohail

Share

Since being occupied by the Christians in 1485, Sohail castle has lived a turbulent past, being razed to the ground and built up again on a number of occasions. It was built in stone using stonemasonry with brick walls, mudwalls and blocks of stone to strengthen some parts of the building. The site is home to ruins dating back to the original settlement about which limited archaeological and documentary information is known.

The castle affords beautiful views over the estuary of the river Fuengirola. 38 metres above sea level, it also offers vistas over the Mediterranean and a large expanse of the coastline that is dominated by Sierra de Mijas.

This fortress was meticulously restored and cared for to prevent it from further deterioration and to be able to use it as a tourism and cultural resource. It was updated as a privileged outdoor auditorium, which currently has become the setting for one of the most important musical events of the Costa del Sol, Marenostrum Fuengirola.
