Culture and Museums
Visiting the Costa del Sol is a unique opportunity to soak up art and culture. Málaga capital is the city that witnessed the birth of Pablo Picasso. There are numerous cultural activities centred around this great painter. Get ready for one of the most inspirational routes through Málaga province: the route of museums and other cultural highlights.
The Costa del Sol's museums route
There is a huge range of museums to visit. If you are travelling to Málaga capital, don't miss the Carmen Thyssen Museum and its magnificent collection of works of Andalusian costumbrismo. You can also visit the Collection of the Russian Museum of St Petersburg and the Automobile Museum, which has displays of classic and modern cars.
For more unusual examples, we would recommend the Museum of Glass and Crystal, in Málaga; the Miniatures Museum, in Mijas, the Bonsai Museum in Marbella and the Bandit Museum in Ronda.
Contemporary art and urban art in Málaga province
If you love contemporary art, you’ll find a range of different options on the Costa del Sol. In Málaga capital, you can begin with a visit to the Málaga Centre for Contemporary Art (CAC Málaga). The permanent collection is complemented by different temporary exhibitions, performances and installations. Admission is free.
In the Málaga Pompidou Centre you can admire works by artists of the calibre of Frida Kahlo, Miró and Picasso. Another essential visit is the Picasso Museum, where some of the artist's finest works are on display, together with interesting temporary exhibitions.
The towns in Málaga province also offer excellent opportunities for enjoying contemporary art. This is true of the Mijas Centre for Contemporary Art (CAC Mijas), which boasts a large collection of Picasso's ceramics, and the Centre for Contemporary Art in Vélez-Málaga, dedicated to emerging art and new artists.
Galleries, exhibition rooms and urban art
In recent years culture has blossomed on the Costa del Sol. This can be seen in the appearance of new art spaces and the steps taken to develop artistic creation. There is now an abundance of art galleries, exhibitions and studios where you can enjoy the work of local artists.
This burst of activity can also be noticed on the streets and in particular districts, such as Soho de Málaga. This area is known as the arts district and its streets have literally become a blank canvas for street artists. Here you can admire the work of such important international artists as OBEY and D*Face.
Genalguacil is another reference point for urban art. The famous Art Encounters held in this small town in the Serranía de Ronda have transformed it into a real open air museum.
