Every year on the 16 July, Malaga celebrates Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen, an event full of sobriety and devotion in which locals pay homage to the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. The El Palo, Huelin and Pedregalejo neighbourhoods are the focal points of the event. The festivities commence with the Virgen del Mar procession through the city streets. The statue of the patron saint is then carried onto a traditional fishing boat known as a jábega and then submerged and sunk to the bottom of the sea by professional divers. The Virgen is asked to continue protecting the city and anyone that ventures out to sea. This tradition is a must-see event that’ll blow you away.
