Holy Week in Alcaucín is rich in local culture, with gastronomy and traditional religious figures carried around the town to immerse you in the festivities. On Maundy Thursday, admire the religious image Señor de la Cruz (Jesus on the Cross) carried on a huge adorned throne by lines of men, and on Good Friday it’s time for Santo Sepulcro, or the ‘Entierro de Cristo’, where the figure of Jesus after his death is paraded along the streets. At midnight, the traditional Soledad night procession takes place, in which women walk through the town carrying the image of Mary. Typical Easter sweets and other snacks are a very important part of the festival. The potaje (stew), roscos tontos (sweet pastry rings), tortas de aceite (olive oil biscuits), and buñuelos (fried donuts) are all scrumptious.
