The Marquis de Beniel Palace is Vélez-Málaga’s most important civic building as it is the headquarters of the local Department of Culture and María Zambrano Foundation. The building stands out for its Renaissance Mudéjar architectural style with notable influences from local architecture.
The building’s origins date back from the 17th century thanks to the aristocrat Alonso Molina de Medrano. Following his death and without descendants, he bequeathed it to his nephews, the Marquises de Beniel (a small town in Murcia), giving the building its name. Starting in the 19th century, at the bequest of the widowed marquess, it became municipal property and became the headquarters of the María Zambrano Foundation in 1988.
Its grandeur and beauty make it unique. The palace has two floors and a penthouse linked by a Renaissance-style staircase. It also has an interior patio with stone columns that end in semicircular arches that are signs of classic Mudéjar architecture readopted in the Baroque era.
