Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Share

The San Juan Batista Church in Vélez-Málaga was built on the site of a medieval mosque in 1487 in a Gothic-Mudejar style. In the following centuries, it has undergone several restorations and structural changes. The church expanded in 1541 and saw the bell tower constructed in 1564. This church has three naves with six sections separated by six-point arches. The central nave is the most important and stands out in the difference in height and width compared to the other two naves. Another significant renovation happened in the mid-19th century, where they added neoclassical features, with Federico Vahey, Isabel II's Minister of Grace and Justice of Isabel II promoting this renovation. This church contains works of great architectural, historical and artistic value.
