Cementerio Inglés de Málaga

English Cemetery in Málaga (Cementerio Inglés de Málaga)

Also known as the Anglican Cemetery or the Cemetery of St. George, the Cementerio Inglés is the oldest Protestant cemetery in Spain that was founded in 1831 on land that the Governor of Málaga gave to the British Consul. It’s in the heart of Málaga near the Pedro Luis Alonso Gardens and the La Malagueta Bullring.

The Junta de Andalucía gave it Bien de Interés Cultural status (named it a cultural interest site) in 2012 and is currently a botanical garden. Famous personalities buried there include writers Jorge Guillén, Gerald Brenan, Finnish author Arne Haapakoski and Marjorie Grice-Hutchinson.

Inside the cemetery, you can find a set of sepulchral monuments from a variety of architectural styles like the Classical, Neo-Gothic or Modernist. It’s worth visiting this slice of history and get a better understand of this beautiful city’s past.
