We got to Benalauría around 15:00, after completing stage 5 of the Great Málaga Path, which joins Benarrabá and Benalauría. It is a 12.3 kilometre route with steep uphill and downhill sections and some level stretches.
No sooner than we arrived, we stopped off for a bite to eat at the La Molienda inn, where we tried a delicious dessert made with chestnuts. This typical restaurant also sells home-made products such as cheeses from the Ronda mountain range and home-made marmalades.
After lunch, we went for a little wander around the village, starting with the viewpoint in Calle Calvario. From there we went to the Plaza del Teniente Viñas, which is where the Village Hall is as well as some stately homes and the fountains La Fuente and La Fuentecilla. At the beginning of August every year, Plaza Teniente Viñas plays host to the traditional Festival of Moors and Christians, and involves the residents of the village recreating a battle in commemoration of the Mudejar rebellion of 1501.
We then followed Calle Alta, stopping by at the Ethnography Museum. It was fascinating to learn more about the history of this tiny village in the Serranía de Ronda, and about its customs and traditions. We bought some chestnuts in liqueur back with us as a souvenir, which is a typical product of the region. When we left the museum, we walked on towards Plaza del Fresnillo and went down into the Church of Santo Domingo to finish off our route.
