Festival of Moors and Christians
On the first Sunday of August, Benalauría is staging its Festival of Moors and Christians, commemorating the Mudéjar riots that took place in the fifteenth century.
Locals re-enact some of the historical events: a Moorish party comes to town, plunders the parish church and kidnaps the patron saint, St Dominic (Santo Domingo de Guzmán). The Christians then make a rescue team, arresting the sons of the Moorish leader and starting negotiations to get their saint and church back.
A striking traditional celebration in a lovely white village in Serranía de Ronda. Main sights include the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Town Hall. Fans of country travel will also find interesting the Old Wine Press and the Museum of Ethnography.
