Thermae in Carratraca
In 1851, these waters were declared to be of public utility by Royal Order. Since then, the infirmed have been arriving from all corners to take these waters and cure their ailments and ills, always achieving an extraordinary result.
The thermal spa building in Carratraca was commissioned by Ferdinand VII and inaugurated in 1855, built in a Neo-Classical style from sandstone and marble. It is set in the foothills of the Sierra Blanquilla, right by the natural spring.
The properties of the waters, as well as the service provided by the spa, won several prizes and awards in Malaga, Madrid, Barcelona, as well as the gold medal in Paris in 1878.
Illustrious figures have always come to Carratraca to take the waters, including: Cánovas del Castillo, Estévanez Calderón, Rilke, Lord Byron, Romero de Torres, Muñoz Degrain, Alexander Dumas, Campoamor, Vicente Aleixandre, Eugene Giraud, Ferdinand VII, Eugenia de Montijo, Trinidad Grund, Antonio Banderas, Antonio Gala...
Today, the Roman Thermae of Carratraca have been reborn with renewed vigour thanks to the personal dedication of Ricardo Arranz to recover this historical gem, adapting it to the latest technologies and requirements of health tourism, so that it can forge its way once again into global society, and ensure that Carratraca regains its former name "Little Monte Carlo".
Following 2 years of intense restoration and remodelling by the R&A Capital group, Villa Padierna Termas in Carratraca, with 43 exceptional luxury rooms, reopened at the end of 2007 with all its former luxury and splendour, which drew eminent figures from across old Europe to come and lose themselves in this oasis of peace and tranquillity.
