Fiesta de los Polvos- Agenda Ocio Cultural de la Provincia de Málaga y su Costa del Sol.

‘Day of the Powder’ of Tolox

Share

The Fiesta del Día de los Polvos (Powder Day Festival) takes place on Shrove Tuesday in Tolox, a town in the province of Málaga. The tradition is that the town"s inhabitants throw talcum powder at each other until they are completely covered. The event takes place in the Plaza Alta del Pueblo, and starts when the performances of the street bands, chirigotas (comic carnival groups) and carnival troupes, and the fancy dress competitions, are all finished.

According to the town's history, the tradition comes from a game in which young men proposed to their loved ones in this manner: covering them with talcum powder or flour. This tradition originated in the 19th century. The young men had to find a way to cover the young woman they wanted with flour, and any way of achieving their aim was valid: from scaling a fence or railings to climbing down a chimney.
