The Night of San Juan in Malaga
- 23 Jun 2019 - 24 Jun 2019 The Night of San Juan in Malaga
Every 23 June (the evening before the feast day of San Juan), thousands of locals from Malaga spend the night at the beach to celebrate the arrival of summer.
It’s traditional to bring everything needed for a successful beach party: wood for the bonfires, wishes written on paper for burning, good music... and to come in good spirits ready to enjoy smoked fish (espetos de sardinas - sardines on skewers) on the beach, in the places where this is allowed. In Malaga city, the party centres on Malagueta Beach and there are usually live concerts from 11 p.m.
At midnight on Saturday 23 June 2019, the traditional Juas (rag dolls stuffed with sawdust and paper) will be burned and young people jump over the embers. On this date, people also bathe in the sea, making three wishes.
